Picture rail systems in India

A picture rail is fixed once along the top of a wall or to the ceiling. Artwork hangs from it on cords and sliding hooks, so you can move, add or rehang pieces without drilling again. Here is how the JAM system works, what it costs and how to work out what your wall needs.

How a picture rail system works

The system has three parts. An aluminium rail is screwed to the wall just below the ceiling, or to the ceiling itself. A Perlon cord with a Cobra end clips into the rail's channel and slides along it. A hook rides on the cord and locks at any height; the frame's wire or D-ring rests on the hook.

You drill once, to fix the rail. After that every change is tool-free: slide a cord sideways to move a piece, slide a hook up or down to change its height, or clip in another cord to add a frame. That is why galleries, offices and hotels that change their walls often use rails instead of nails.

A typical artwork uses two cords and two hooks, which keeps it level and halves the load on each hook. A small, light frame can hang on one.

How much rail you need

Order the length of the wall you want to hang on. Rail is sold by the running foot and we cut it to the lengths you order, in quarter-foot steps, up to 100 ft a piece. Longer runs are supplied as several pieces fitted end to end. Each cord takes very little rail, so you can hang as many pieces along it as the load allows.

What 25 kg per metre means

The rail is rated 25 kg per metre of rail, spread along it. A 3 m (about 10 ft) run can carry up to 75 kg in total, as long as no single metre carries more than 25 kg. Each Perlon cord is rated 20 kg and each hook 4 kg or 15 kg. The lowest rating in the chain is the limit.

These are the stated ratings for each part, not independent laboratory certificates. The fixings you use must also suit the wall or ceiling. Weigh heavy pieces before you hang them.

Walls and ceilings it fixes to

The rail can be fixed to brick and RCC walls, gypsum board partitions, POP or gypsum false ceilings, and wood panelling. What changes is the fixing: plugs in masonry, anchors made for board, and screws into the framing above a false ceiling rather than into the board alone.

Choosing the cord length

Choose the cord by how far the hook has to drop from the rail to the top of the frame. With the rail at the ceiling, ceiling height is a good guide:

Cord length by ceiling height, rail at the ceiling
Ceiling heightCordPrice each
Up to 9 ft (about 2.7 m)150 cm₹850
9 to 12 ft (2.7–3.7 m)250 cm₹1,250
Above 12 ft (over 3.7 m)300 cm₹1,450

When in doubt, take the longer cord: the hook can sit anywhere along it. To work it out for one artwork, use the hanging-height tool in how to hang pictures.

Finishes

The rail comes in white, black and silver, which suit most interiors. White disappears against a white wall or ceiling; black reads as a deliberate line in a gallery; silver matches aluminium window and door frames. If you need another colour, the aluminium can be primed and painted on site.

Questions

How much does a picture rail cost in India?

The JAM aluminium rail is priced per running foot, plus 18% GST, and cut to the lengths you order. Cords and hooks are priced per piece. A typical artwork needs two cords and two hooks. The rail calculator on this page prices your wall with today's prices.

Can I install a picture rail myself?

Yes. The rail is designed for installation with basic tools: a drill, the right fixings for your wall or ceiling, and a level. For large commercial projects we can arrange professional installation.

Is a picture rail a good idea in a rented flat?

It usually means fewer holes, not more: one line of fixings for the rail instead of a hole for every frame and every rearrangement. Ask your landlord before drilling, as you would for any fixing.

Will the cords show?

The Perlon cord is transparent, so from a normal viewing distance it is close to invisible against most walls.

Can the rail go on the ceiling?

Yes. It mounts to a wall or to the ceiling, including under a POP or gypsum false ceiling when it is fixed into the framing rather than the board alone.

How heavy can one artwork be?

On two cords with Zipper hooks, up to 30 kg in total (15 kg per hook) when the two cords are more than a metre apart, so no metre of rail carries more than 25 kg. Heavier pieces need more cords spread along the rail; ask us before you hang them.
